Prevent your home from being damage by high humidity using a commercial dehumidifier. Wood and moisture doesn’t mix together, so if you have a wooden home and furniture, the moisture can actually cause it to get rotten. High humidity can also influence molds to develop and generate foul odor which is unhealthy. It can also damage your things like books, ceiling and paintwork. Other benefits of using a dehumidifier is that, it filters and collect air-borne harmful bacteria and allergens present in the air that can cause health problems before sending it back to the room. The filters are washable, so no need to buy a replacement filters regularly.
They are very simple to operate, once plugged-in just hit the start button to turn it on and set the desired setting. It normally has preset settings of 30, 35 to 60% humidity; the actual reading is also displayed on the digital display for easy monitoring. You can adjust the speed of the fan, the higher the speed, the more water is collected in less time, if you want to take a nap or if you have children at home and you don’t want to disturb them while they are sleeping just select the fan speed to minimum to reduce the noise level.
There are two types of commercial dehumidifiers for sale, one is the refrigerated type and the other is the desiccant type. The refrigerated type works very similar to an air-conditioner where it sucks the surrounding air and lowers its temperature forcing the moisture content of the air to condensed back to its liquid form so you can purge it. The lower the temperature or the higher the differences between the surrounding air and the evaporator temperature, the dryer the air you’re going to get.
Actually you can also use the air-conditioning unit to dehumidify but it can only work on the room where the unit is installed and you cannot use it during winter or you will freeze to death. On the other hand commercial dehumidifiers exhaust both cold and hot air, when mixed together gives you the equivalent of the surrounding temperature. You can use it in some other rooms without air-conditioner during the summer especially in the attic and basement. If you want to completely remove the moisture of the entire house you need a dedicated unit, it function and looks very similar to an air-conditioning unit but it is specifically designed to remove large amount of moisture.
If you only need to dehumidify a certain room say the basement and you have a tight budget, you might want to purchase the portable type. It’s a lot cheaper than the centralized or whole house dehumidifier and cost about $166 to $235 depending on the capacity you choose. It is available in 50, 65, 70 pint which indicate the capacity of water removed per day, other brands use the floor area for the capacity like 1700 square feet and so on. Unlike the fixed-type, it’s a standalone unit with built-in reservoir for storing the water it collected from the surrounding air. If the water reservoir is already full, you must manually purge it, so you need to monitor it from time to time to avoid it from overflowing and ruining the floor. Some models have a built-in alarm that will warn you if the bucket is full and automatically shuts off the unit. If you plan on using it while you are away, you can purchase one with a built-in pump or buy a separate condensate water pump to automatically purge it outside of the house once full. Just connect a garden hose to the outlet pipe and run it outside the window.
The other type of commercial dehumidifier is the desiccant type, unlike refrigerated type that uses Freon to lower the temperature of the air in order to separate the moisture content, the desiccant-type uses a silica gel to absorb the moisture from the air. They are harder to setup because you need to run a large diameter ducting flexible hose to the outside of the house before you can actually operate it, but once setup it can continue to operate without any supervision. This type of unit is usually used by restoration contractors due to its effectiveness and very fast result. It is also best to use in any kind of weather condition since it doesn’t alter the temperature of the surrounding air.
